The cranes , which are capable of handling up to 150 tonnes of cargo , are just the latest step in PD Ports ’ drive towards net zero and build on an already strong record of delivery .
PD Ports has electrified 70 per cent of its rubber tyred gantry cranes – used for the loading and unloading of containers – since 2020 , delivering an average saving of 700 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year .
The remainder of the fleet is now also in the process of electrification .
As a port of strategic national importance , Teesport is not just a critical gateway for international trade , however .

This was then followed in November when a deal was secured with Green Lithium that will see Teesport become home to the UK ’ s first green lithium refinery , boosting the UK ’ s electric car supply chain .
The refinery will employ a process with a carbon footprint that is 80 per cent lower than the traditional processes used internationally , while also creating more than 100 jobs during construction and an additional 250 when in operation .
