“ We ’ re planning for growth – massive growth .” That was the message from the CEO of a River Tees-based engineering firm after picking up a prestigious VelociTees award . Wilton Engineering , which has a 112-acre site on the banks of the river at Port
Clarence , picked up the SME Job Creation award . The company , established in 1994 , clinched the award for raising its staff numbers from 58 to 125 in just one year . And “ really pleased ” company boss Bill Scott OBE predicted there ’ ll be more to come . He smiled : “ We ’ re negotiating some defence contracts – I can ’ t say too much or I ’ d have to kill you ! “ But these contracts are huge and we ’ re planning for growth – massive growth . That ’ s something I ’ m really proud of .” Bill said setting up its own training academy was a vital part of helping keep skills on Teesside and within Wilton Engineering . “ What we ’ ve done differently is we ’ ve taken our own in-house trainers on , which has seen exponential growth in their confidence and their skill sets .
“ And the standard of the young people is amazing . A lot of people think it ’ s always difficult taking apprentices on and wonder how they are going to manage . But from my point of view , it ’ s fresh blood coming into the business .”
