Celebrating 150 years of maritime excellence
Ever since Danish brothers Hans and Harald Casper arrived in Middlesbrough in 1872 , Casper has been providing end-to-end shipping solutions across the UK , Europe and beyond .
Now , 150 years later , that same spirit of independence and innovation is more alive than ever . The group has marked a century and a half in style , with record growth and even an acknowledgement from the late Queen .
The historic milestone was capped off by being crowned the Fastest Growing Large Business at Ward Hadaway ’ s North East Fastest 50 , with Casper claiming top spot for businesses exceeding £ 30m turnover .
Overseeing Casper ’ s evolution across 11 sites nationwide is managing director Michael Shakesheff .
“ Despite exceptional recent circumstances , we ’ ve continued to adjust , invest and innovate ,” he said . “ A big part of that has been digitising and future-proofing our processes . But behind these trailblazing technologies is our practical experience .”
On top of that , the group is playing a key role in the region ’ s post-Brexit economy . In September , Casper became the UK ’ s

first designated customs site operator , setting up the primary zone for Teesside Freeport .
This three-acre “ pin in the ground ” allowed the rest of the 4,500-acre site to be a legal freeport , unlocking the opportunity to facilitate trade and create areas of innovation .
A particularly poignant moment came from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II , just months before her passing .
After a letter sent on behalf of Casper paying tribute to the Platinum Jubilee , the Queen returned her warm wishes for the landmark year .
The significant occasion was also commemorated with a day of celebrations in London . Attended by members of the Casper team , as well as clients and partners , the occasion toasted the company ’ s rich heritage and recent achievements .
Michael added : “ Without the support of our suppliers and customers , we wouldn ’ t be where we are today .
“ The same goes for our people , who work tirelessly to build long-term relationships and provide a hands-on approach at all times . Thanks to everyone who ’ s played their part in our journey .”
With a strengthened position as the UK ’ s leading independent maritime company , Casper looks set to chart a course towards its next phase of growth – one that ’ s built on constant improvement , deep-rooted partnerships and community commitment .
ALWAYS ON , SINCE 1872 .
In an uncertain world , Casper have been a constant for 150 years .
From the laying of Middlesbrough Town Hall ’ s foundation stone in 1883 , to the construction of the Transporter Bridge in 1910 and the opening of the Riverside Stadium in 1995 — Casper have been part of the fabric of Teesside for well over a century .
