Baker Street bounces back

BY JULIE BURNISTON . PIC : MARTIN WALKER .

One of Middlesbrough ’ s best

loved eateries has reopened post-Covid to resume serving incredible food to its loyal fan base .
Baker Street Kitchen operates as a coffee bar / bistro during the day . Famous for mouthwatering cakes , delicious all-day breakfasts and signature dishes such as crispy chicken waffles with maple syrup , the venue is hugely popular with shoppers and town centre office workers and has a loyal clientele .
“ Our clients have been amazing ,” says owner Simon Fletcher . “ With their support and with the dedication of the team who have been absolute superstars , we are seeing full tables once again .”
Simon was quick to implement government guidelines for safe dining , which filled clients with confidence and , thanks to the government ’ s Eat Out To Help Out scheme , Baker Street enjoyed full houses Monday to Wednesday throughout August , with the numbers remaining stable despite the scheme ending .
“ The Eat Out To Help Out scheme was great ,” says Simon . “ Actually , we were full most of the week , not just on the designated days . I think it ’ s made people realise how much they missed socialising and reinforced the fact that they can enjoy a good meal despite the restrictions .”
While working to strict Covid guidelines has seen the workload increase for the Baker Street staff , they have embraced the changes with a smile .
“ They ’ re a loyal and longstanding team who I couldn ’ t be without ,” says Simon . “ All of them were itching to get back to work and they haven ’ t let me down .”
With Amy Owens stepping up as the new general manager , the future looks bright for the town centre establishment , perched on the corner of Baker Street and Albert Road .
“ Amy is doing a really fantastic job leading the team ,” says Simon . “ She is implementing new autumn menus and is full of enthusiasm . Morale is really high at the moment and we all look forward to welcoming back clients who may not have ventured out yet and , of course , those who want to give us a try .”
