It’s hard to ignore the bad news that has come out of Teesside in the
past few months but there is still much to celebrate, in spite of some
of the gloomy headlines that have appeared about our industries.
Over 2,000 steelmaking jobs were lost,
followed by job losses at Cleveland Potash
mine in Boulby and the HMRC offices.
Television news programmes have featured
many reports by forlorn journalists standing
outside the area’s now redundant SSI
steelworks in Redcar, but there is also a lot
of positive news for the region to take heart
from.
A total of 51 apprentices were left high
and dry by the closure of the steelworks but
hopes are high that they will all be supported
and offered places to complete their training.
Many of them will be heading for our
neighbour, the thriving Wilton International
site, and hopefully also to the Wilton Centre
itself with its focus on supporting and
encouraging innovation and excellence in
business.
This is an encouraging sign as a skilled
workforce is vital to maintaining the
adaptability and diversity of the Teesside
economy that are amongst the area’s
greatest strengths.
The granting of full and final planning
permission for Sirius Minerals to sink the first
mine on the country for 50 years is another
piece of recent good news. The planned
pipeline from the minehead will link to a

materials handling facility on the Wilton site
and the project promises to create 1,000
direct jobs.
More good news has also emerged from
the cutting edge of commercial science with
Wilton Centre tenant Applied Graphene
Materials, which manufactures the so-called
‘wonder substance’ graphene, the superstrong, superconductive and most flexible
material in the world, announcing its second
joint business development deal in as many
months.
The region has also been given full rein to
dictate its own destiny in developing skills
and jobs following the signing of the historic
devolution deal signed by the Chancellor of
the Exchequer, George Osborne, and the
granting of a £450m pot over the next 30
years.
Positive news stories like these and
countless other achievements by Teesside
businesses continue to pack the pages of
Tees Business.

Teesside is to do business.
