Serving the Teesside Business Community | 15 College and local industry join forces to help former SSI workers M iddlesbrough College is working with a range of partners to help those affected by the closure of SSI. The college has received £1.2m – the largest amount awarded to any training provider - to offer a range of specialist industrial training courses for former SSI workers and contractors. An initial consultation event attracted more than 60 people. The college is talking to those affected to find out what kind of training would best suit their needs. The college is also working with the experts at Job Centre Plus and the National Careers Service to help people steer a course through the complicated processes and secure the best future possible for themselves and their families. Midlesbrough College offers the widest range of courses available in the Tees Valley and training is being offered free of charge to those who can show they’ve been directly affected by recent events in the steel industry. The courses include the key qualifications required within the process, engineering, manufacturing and supply chain industry and are aimed at those former SSI workers and contractors in the supply chain who want to upskill or retrain. Senior advisors from more than 40 leading companies have shaped the course offering at Middlesbrough College to ensure the training on offer matches the needs of industry. The courses available now for delivery cover a range of disciplines including instrumentation and control, process plant technology, computer-aided design and manufacture, supply chain solutions, site operations and efficiency, health and safety, robotics, machining, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering.
