The launch of this magazine earlier this year is just one example of the drive and determination to succeed that exists in this area. Its pages are full of local businesses demonstrating the spirit of enterprise and ambition that’s been a fundamental part of Teesside life for generations. Indeed, this issue is packed with news and features from across Teesside. There are features with not only Middlesbrough College, but also the likes of Applied Integration, PD Ports, Cornerstone Business Solutions, Northern Machine Tools, Mill Volvo Stockton, Midas Cladding, Evolution, CPD Bodies and Ecco Finishing Supplies, among others. The breadth of content and all the positive news really makes for encouraging reading. At Middlesbrough College we’re seeing a growing confidence among local businesses and an increasing number of highly-talented students. It all adds up to the promise of a bright future, and by working together we can do even more. We often describe Middlesbrough College as a “world under one roof” which makes , it the ideal barometer to gauge what’s happening on Teesside. We work with hundreds of employers across a wide range of sectors and we’ve seen a growth in employer skills training and an increase in the number of apprenticeships. At the centre of it all is an incredible sense of pride and positivity in this area and its communities. That pride and positivity was evident when we talked to employers about how best the college could help fill an engineering skills gap. More than 40 leading companies committed to working with the college to create a £20m STEM Centre (science, technology, engineering and maths). That work is now coming to fruition and the stunning new centre will open in September – come down and take a look! It’s recognised that employers who invest in young people and who are passionate about retaining and developing local talent are the ones who achieve great things. And Middlesbrough College is delighted to help them do just that.
