FOREWORD By Gary Dawson
Welcome to the debut edition of Tees Business a brand new and exciting B2B magazine for Teesside.
I
t gives me great pleasure to write the first
guest foreword for what I believe is a long
overdue publication for our great region.
At AV Dawson, we have just completed
the last phase of a £12.5m masterplan, which
has enabled our company to grow by more
than a third.
The three-phase plan included a £2.6m
intermodal rail terminal, which provides
freight firms with a direct link to the East
Coast Mainline, and a £3.4m deepwater
quay, which allows us to receive much larger
vessels for offshore and renewables project
work.
Our development activities have been
recently completed with the opening of a
£6.5m automotive steel distribution centre.
The 102,263sqft facility provides a base for
steel producers such as Tata to store up to
58,000 tonnes of steel coil, which is used
to supply the North East automotive sector,
lead by car giant Nissan.

The overall investment is the largest in
our 77-year history, enabling us to add an
additional 62 people to our staff, taking our
total workforce to 240.
We’ve been exporting more steel through
our quayside on the River Tees than at any
time in the last 15 years. Our warehousing
has been running at capacity for the last five
years, and we’re on course to breach £20m
turnover.
We’re extremely proud of our Teesside
roots, and we’re absolutely delighted
that, in Tees Business, we now have a
quality publication to give us a platform to
communicate direct to other businesses and
share our success stories from around the
region.
In this first issue, there are positive
features with the likes of PD Ports, Durham
Lifting, Tees Components, Middlesbrough
College, Stockton Machine Company,
Fairfield Industries and Ecco Supplies, among
others, including some key suppliers to AV
Dawson.
It gives me great reassurance to see many
other businesses thriving on Teesside - and
long may that continue.
