Broken Nails Brianna T. Grade 8 Staff Member On the planet of Cort rested the peaceful city of Blur. This city was no different than any other city: Busy streets, a plethora of apartment complexes, numerous houses, landmarks, restaurants; the whole package. If you looked deep enough through the many houses, you would find a girl named Aurora Tower. This young lady had long, dark-brown hair, a fair complexion, green eyes, and was thin. She often spent her time making blanket forts, sitting on her in-room swing, reading, playing a video game, or climbing the nearest tree. She never really spent time with friends… as she never really had any. Life on Cort is practically the same as life on Earth…with one exception. No, they don’t have four eyes or two noses. Each person has glowing fingernails and toenails… except for the mysterious Aurora. This was the reason she had few friends. However, her lack of friends was substituted in by vicious bullies. She could hardly go along her day peacefully without the heaps of other middle school kids who would stuff their trash into her bag when she wasn’t looking. Uncaring kids like those were the whole reason she needed an in-room swing; she could not sit on an outdoor rope swing without some heartless acquaintance chopping it down. “Looks like Aurora Tower’s is about to topple!” they would scream at her as she bit her lip, using every bit of strength she had left to fight back tears. By the end of the school day, she would always end up with gum in her hair or a strange stain on her clothing from someone chucking food at her. There was only one person who never made fun of her nails at her school, and his name was Cardlin. He had shiny dark brown hair that always effortlessly swooped upwards. He was tall, wore glasses, and dressed as if he had a personal stylist. Understandably, he was Aurora’s love interest. However, he had absolutely no interest in her; after all, why would he? The torture would end as she sprinted home and into her loving mother’s arms. Aurora’s parents, Delilah and Edgar, both had glowing nails... so it was strange as to why she didn’t. Still, according to doctors, Aurora was completely healthy and normal. Her fingernails and toenails were, “Just a little mishap in the womb.” But Aurora never felt normal once in her life. Especially because her father passed away when she was only five years old in a car accident. She clung onto her mother, tears swiftly slid down Aurora’s cheeks like glass slugs. “Sshhhhhh... shhhhh. Calm down, love.” cooed Delilah. “Those classmates don’t mean anything. Okay?” Before Aurora could say anything, her faithful kitten, Juno, came running up to her. Juno was… a bit odd to say the least. He was blind from one eye and had half of an ear missing. Fortunately, he was still very young, content, and healthy. After he trotted over to Aurora and hopped onto her shoulder, he licked the tears away from her face, allowing for a tiny smile to come through. “Hi boy!” she yelped as her spirits were immediately lifted. She gently caressed his soft black fur. “Thank you for my kisses, Sweetheart.” “Why don’t you take Juno up to your room? Dinner will be ready in a short while.” said her mother with a caring smile. 39
