I yelped, jumping up in my seat as the doorbell rang. I looked in the mirror one last time, fixing the bowtie around my neck for what seemed like the hundredth time. I grinned at my appearance and opened the door, revealing my date in wearing an amazing outfit. “Ready?” They asked, holding their hand out for me to take, to which I gladly did as we walked down the porch and buckled up inside their car. Once we arrived to our destination, we heard the loud music pounding through the chipped, old walls of our school and it looked like many others had already arrived, seeing as there were many cars parked already. I hopped out of the car and we strolled through the littered hallway, stopping in front of the gym doors. “You sure about this?” I asked, hopeful they’d say yes, my hand gripped tight on the door handle while the other was intertwined with theirs. “Never been more sure in my life.” they announced and I exhaled a breath I didn’t realize I was holding in. We pushed the doors open, walking inside the gym that smelled subtlety of sweat and disinfectant. Many students were sprawled all over the dance floor and as we walked hand-in-hand, many people stopped to stare. I hung my head low, embarrassed of what we were doing. I mustered up the courage to look up and saw people giving us disgusted stares. We shouldn’t have come, this was a horrible idea, I should’ve said no. “No one wanted people like you here.” A voice spoke and I looked up only to see one of the jocks facing me, a sly grin on his face. My body shook, saying I was terrified was an understatement. “No one said we couldn’t come. Besides, no one really likes judgemental jerks like you people.” I looked to me right and saw that they was speaking, their words prevented me from breaking down then and there, and I managed a smile, feeling more confident in what we were doing. “We didn’t wanna be here anyways.” I sassed and stormed out, my head high this time and my date trailing fast behind me. Our footsteps echoed in the dimly lit hallway and I kept walking, stopping beside the car. I sighed loudly and they looked at me, a smile still on their face. “You don’t regret coming here with me?” I asked, my eyes were shut, I knew they’d say yes. “No, I don’t.” I opened my eyes to see their hazel ones in front of mine. Then, they turned around, getting inside the car, gesturing for me to also get inside. I entered the car and buckled up, biting my lip to prevent myself from smiling so much, failing miserably. A comfortable silence befell us as they started to drive down the road. “Hey Alex?” I asked and they turned their head to face me, letting me know they were listening. “I don’t regret this either.” 35
