A diFfERenT gHosT It was getting dark on October 28. Three days before Halloween night. As the time got later, the “friendly” ghosts were settling down in the cemetery. All of the ghosts acted the same, and looked the same. All of them, except one. George. George was a very different ghost than from the others. He was larger than the other ones. He was a much nicer ghost than the others. But most of all, he had a very different face. His face wasn’t as ghostly as the other ghosts. His eyes were square, not round and had a smiley face, not a scary face like everybody else. George always felt left out because he was very different, and the ghosts were nice to everybody but him. They treated him as if he were a jack-o-lantern from another town. Nobody ever talks to him. It’s as if he were invisible to all of the ghosts. All because he was different. George always tried making friends, but everybody just avoided him like he was a virus. Sometimes, if nobody was looking, he would cry a little because he hated being different. He was tired of being alone, avoided, and of course, different. He knew there was nothing he could do. He couldn’t fit in with anybody. He tried even harder to make friends, but nobody seemed to be the same as him. Nobody was as different as him. His parents had been at another cemetery while this was happening. He had no one to talk to. He was just a teenage ghost, and he was already struggling. It was the next day, and it was night time. Of course, George had nothing to do but suffer being alone. His parents were coming back today. He would finally have people to talk to about his situation. When his parents finally got there, he floated to them as fast as he could as if he had super speed. He was really happy to see them. As soon as they finished their little happy greet, George started talking to them right away. After about 15 seconds of talking, George’s parents got really angry. They couldn’t believe that their own ghost was going through this. His parents told him that he should ask people why they wouldn’t hang out with him, but George already knew the answer. The harder it got for George, the more he wanted to just leave. But deep down, he knew that it wasn’t the right thing to do, and that he should try and do something about it. After thinking about what he should do, he decided that the first thing would be to try really hard to start a conversation with some ghosts, and hopefully become friends with those ghosts. He knew that there had to be some ghosts that would talk to him. By: Kaylie V. Staff Member, Grade 7 He waited a while before he would go out. After waiting, he saw a group of ghosts that he thought he should start a conversation with. He floated up to them and introduced himself. Everybody else in the group said hello to George. George tried to start and actual conversation by saying how excited he was for Halloween. Everybody else said the same thing. George started to say that he doesn’t like to really scare the kids, but give them a little bit more of a small spook. The ghosts in the group definitely agreed with him. One of the ghosts had said how they like to see the trick-or-treaters smiling. George and the rest of them had said how they like that too. George noticed that the ghosts and himself had a lot of things in common. Since it wasn’t official, he knew he had to do something; make it official being friends. So he asked the group if they would consider him a friend, and George was so happy at their response. They said yes! George had finally gotten what he wanted: friends and happiness. He hadn’t been this excited for a while. His new friends didn’t care that he was different from them. That’s what they loved about him, that he was different. They thought that is being different is what made him unique. George has turned out to be a very happy ghost since he has new friends. He loves being able to have real, nice conversations with ghosts who don’t think he should be avoided. Because George is different, that is the reason he was able to make friends. George learned that being like everybody else is boring and simple. But being different is fun and unique. He no longer wants to be the same as everyone. If you are different, don’t try to fit in. stay the way you are, and you will find the right friends, just like George the ghost! 47
