Teen Depression May 2014 | Page 12

Teens’ social lives are difficult already and the burden of depressions worsens the effects. For example, in school, depression can cause the teen to suddenly fail, act differently or not attend school. Depression causes the teen to disconnect from family, friends, and school, which later causes irrational decisions and behaviors. Imagine each one of them being a “normal” student without the emotions that clouds their judgment, thoughts, behaviors and actions. The issue of teen depression will just be teens sad for personal things, not them locking themselves in room and thinking about suicide. Teen depression may not be resolve, but lessening the causes, may not give you the effects. I want to see a new world into a setting where no one having those upset and sad behaviors and moods. Nothing can hold you back from what you are trying to achieve.

Intervention Proposal

I am a huge fan of music, so when planning my intervention I wanted to involve music into my proposal and I created the idea of having a musical group or all different variety, from singing to playing an instrument. When doing these activities, you don't tend to overthink, you just do and I want them to trust themselves and do what they want. I have research programs that are doing similar projects just like this. Outback Therapeutic Expeditions are using the wilderness to help teens deal with their depression. Pacific Quest and Wolf Creek Academy have the same process, but involving many other mental disorder. This intervention is mostly based on personal experience, because I have many friends with mental disorder and they look to music to solve their problems and it's like a temporary cure. Creating this music club is a step to solve this problem in a small high school and move to others. On further thinking, I see that it doesn’t have to be a music club; it can just be a group of people with a passion for music. This group was to help the person grow self-esteem and confident. It doesn’t have to be official for someone to do something they love, wherever and whenever they want.

Future Plans

I want to start this plan, by the end of next year or sooner, because I am aware many other students are striving for the same thing. I may be about to collaborate with them and see if we can organize and arrange for we can put this in motion to start by the beginning of sophomore for the upcoming freshmen. Researching and understanding this issue helped me be in the shoes of others who are dealing with depression. I have also found a piece of myself and opened up to others to know why this is a problem recently being discovered as an issue. I want to change the world by the sound of music. I know money is always an issue and the sponsor of who will look after the club comes in mind, but think about today and work from that and then move into the future.
