Hit It on The Screws
Metal woods were first introduced in 1979. PGA TOUR professional Ron Streck became the first to win with a metal wood at the 1981 Houston Open. His victory marked the start of the transition from persimmon to metal woods in professional golf. However, most players continued to use persimmon drivers until the mid-1990s because they preferred the feel and shot-shaping ability of persimmon clubs.
In 1979, a club maker named Gary Adams created a new metal wood( no“ Screws” on the face) and named it TaylorMade because it sounded classy. He said,“ Well, if the club bombs, at least I could sell off my remaining inventory to people named Taylor.” Adams is the man whose innovation sparked the game’ s modern metal-wood technological revolution, which now allows golfers 330-yard drives. His creation didn’ t“ Bomb” but did“ Boom.” Eight million metal woods were sold between 1979 and 1989. Sales soared from $ 47,000 in 1979 to $ 1 billion in 1986 and are selling billions more today. Adams sold TaylorMade and went into other ventures, including McHenry’ s Metals and the TourPure Driver.
