Finding Your“ Happy Place”

Well, if you’ re a golf fan, then you’ ve heard that Netflix released Happy Gilmore 2 on July 25. Victoria and I were among the first to watch it. So far, ratings are solid, with 63 % on Rotten Tomatoes to date. While I’ m not a movie review writer, I can’ t resist talking about golf movies, even the slapstick-style or borderline stupid ones. We needed a good laugh and can attest; between the“ what the …” thoughts, we got plenty of laughs with this sequel.

The movie starts a bit dark when a younger Happy tees off an errant shot that clobbers his wife, Virginia, in the head, killing her. It is the reason he quit golfing, went broke, lost his late grandmother’ s house, and became an angry alcoholic grocery store produce department stocker— drinking alcohol from a cucumber and various other gadgets disguised as flasks. Several grocery store scenes include Happy’ s rather angry, repulsive gestures with vegetables( not suitable for children). Once you get past that kind of typical Sandler slapstick, brash comedy, the golf tournament and off-course scenes, Shooter McGavin’ s return, and the 50 or so pro golfers as co-stars, it gets back to that“ Happy Place,” a funny Three Stooges golfing-style comedy. Although he hasn’ t played golf for nearly 20 years, ultimately Happy picks himself up, becomes sober, and stages a comeback as a hockeystyle professional golfer.
The appearances of professional golfers, including Jack Nicklaus, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, and Will Zalatoris, who plays Happy’ s villainous golf tournament competitor, create fun scenes. The cast of professional golfers was impressive. You name it, they made cameos at some point.
The movie includes an outrageous parody about a new golf league called Maxi Golf, a wacky( slam-type) version of LIV Golf.
Several scenes include hilarious pro golfer cameos, including a dining room full of past Masters champions( less Tiger) wearing gold jackets instead of green. Jack Nicklaus offers Happy comical golf advice, encouraging him to get back in the game. Travis Kelce plays a waiter at the Tour Champions dinner to Bad Bunny’ s busboy character, Oscar. Both were hilarious. I’ d say the odds of Kelce making appearances in more movies after he retires from football( possibly next year) would be a solid bet.
John Daly plays himself, as Happy’ s brother, Uncle John, sporting his signature Santa Claus beard. Uncle John lives in Happy’ s garage on a couch, squirts a liquid in his mouth from a hand sanitizer bottle, which is presumably filled with liquor, while encouraging Happy to compete in and win the big upcoming championship. It’ s the only way he’ ll be able to earn the $ 300,000 needed to send his beloved daughter to a prestigious ballet school in Paris.
Happy says,“ I haven’ t played golf for 20 years. I don’ t know where to start.” Uncle John says,“ You have to start at the bottom.” From there, Happy starts his non-stop, hilarious, but hair-triggered temper golf comeback quest.
Victoria and I laughed out loud throughout the whole movie! We loved all the pro golfers’ cameos. It was screwball funny from beginning to end, unless your“ Happy Place” doesn’ t include obscene over-the-top craziness, burping, farting, and seeing people hit in the groin with golf balls!
Find your“ Happy Place” in front of the TV or at a golf course near you.
