KANSAS CITY, KS— Dub’ s Dread Golf Club opened in the late 60s, and today stands alone in national prominence, when it comes to Kansas City area golf courses. It was quickly proclaimed by national golf magazines to be the toughest and longest golf course in America. It remains the only 18-hole public course in the KC area that offers you a chance to walk( or ride in Bluetooth capable carts) the same fairways that legends Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Byron Nelson played— not once, but twice.
“ When Palmer and Nicklaus played Dub’ s Dread, it was played at 8,101 yards stretching across rolling terrain in the village of Piper near Kansas City, KS,” wrote Alan Hoskins in an article for this magazine.“ At the time, the average par 3 at the course was 270 yards, the average par 4 was 473 yards and the average par 5 was 596 yards. During the 60s and 70s, its course rating was 78.8, nearly seven strokes higher than its par of 72.”
Because of changes in the course and a new clubhouse, the course can no longer be played at 8,101 yards( thank goodness); nevertheless, it affords golfers the chance to play the same holes played by many of golf’ s greats. Today the course plays at 7,230 yards from the tips with a course rating of 75.3( par is 72), which means it will test the game of even the best players.
As for price, it’ s rates change by the day of week and time of day. In general, green fees * range from $ 45 weekdays to $ 79 on weekends. Tee times are allowed to be booked up to seven days in advance. All Friday, Saturday, and Sunday tee time bookings must be prepaid online and no discounted rates will be offered. Dress code of a collared shirt is enforced.

SHAWNEE, KS— Tomahawk Hills Golf Course is one of the oldest public courses in Kansas City at its original location. Every golfer remembers the final picturesque hole on each nine holes, and every golfer needs to play it at least once. From the tee boxes constructed on a bluff overlooking a wide expanse of Shawnee, it’ s a drop-in elevation of 92 feet on the 170-yard No. 9 and another 98 feet to the green on the 178-yard 18th hole. They’ re two of the most memorable holes in Kansas City.
Located on Midland Drive just west of I-435, Tomahawk Hills is now in its 115th year. A par 70 played at 5,978 yards from the back tees, Tomahawk Hills plays much longer. Golfers look at 6,000 yards and don’ t expect much— only to find out when they get out on it— it can eat your lunch if not played wisely. It’ s not what they expected. You just have to keep the ball in play.”
For example, the No. 1 handicap hole is the 410-yard par-4 4th featuring a tiered fairway that slopes to the right making it difficult to keep the ball in the fairway and on the green. Toughest on the backside is the 390-yard 12th. A dogleg uphill to an elevated green, even the best of tee shots requires a second shot of 150 yards— and it’ s all uphill. The forward( red) tees are played at 5,117 yards and are highly recommended for seniors and women.
A fun course to play; add it to your“ Must Play” list.
Tomahawk’ s very affordable 2025 non-patron green fees * are $ 29 Mon.-Fri. and $ 36 weekends and holidays. Carts are $ 18. Senior rates Mon.-Fri. only $ 34 with cart. Tomahawk Hills Golf Club, 913.631.8000. Located at 17501 Midland Drive, Shawnee, KS 66218. www. TomahawkHillsgc. com.
BLUE SPRINGS, MO— Adams Pointe Golf Club opened in the spring of 1998 and is owned by the city of Blue Springs, MO. It is among the KC area finest golf facilities. Set in rolling hills, it’ s a true 18-hole championship golf course. Designed by noted architect, Don Sechrest, it has gone through many upgrades since its opening 27 years ago.
Its 30 sand bunkers are filled with pristine Arkansas white sand— adding to that resortfeel golf course.
Nature is the backdrop at Adams Pointe as protected wetland areas line the course along with stone lined ponds and native prairie grass roughs. With immaculate Bentgrass fairways and greens, the challenging front-nine is skillfully carved out of the forest and wetland areas with a creek running through all nine holes. The scenic back nine features championship links-style golf with many elevation changes and ponds that come into play on five holes. Adams Pointe is playable for any skill-level with four sets of tees ranging from 5,060 yards to 6,938 yards.
Memorable holes 2, 6, and 8 are labeled the best by many area golfers. No. 8 is a par 3 and likely the toughest par 3 in Kansas City. If the south wind is strong, the par-5 2nd hole can play an extremely long 525-yards( from the tips). No. 6 par-4 is a magnificent dog-legleft that demands two well-placed shots for any possibility at par. The course is filled with great golf holes.
Regarded as a“ premier course to play” in Kansas City, green fee rates are affordable and all rates include a cart with GPS / hole maps. Hats must be worn facing forward at all times( including Greg’ s).
