Holey Moley ,

It ’ s Ryder Cup Month Already !

Mark your calendars , Saturday , September 23 , marks the fall equinox — bummer — less daylight and fewer hours for golf . Once again , I ask , where did summer go ? No , I did not play enough golf this summer — work got in the way of play , and wow , July and August were hot !

I wonder , is it just me or does the fall equinox signaling winter will soon follow also affect other people ? According to the Mayo Clinic , “ The reduced sunlight affects not only the natural circadian rhythm but also the Melatonin and Serotonin production levels .” And , “ If you ’ re like most people with SAD , your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months , sapping your energy and making you feel moody .”
So , it ’ s not just me ; that ’ s why Ron gets so grumpy and whiny in the winter when he can ’ t play the back tees . We all know ( or should ) that golf balls don ’ t compress as well in cold weather as they will in hot weather , hence less distance off the tee . If you want to have fun golfing in the winter months , move one tee box closer to the green — Ron !
Fear not , avid golfers . Your SAD symptoms will suddenly disappear Friday , September 29 through Sunday , October 1 , as the 43rd Ryder Cup tees off at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club , Rome , Italy . According to Stubhub . com , the average price for a single weekly ticket to the Ryder Cup is $ 857.71 . Okay , that makes me SAD again . I think I ’ ll watch it on TV and buy a lot of Pro V1s instead .
There is hope , though . Historically the USA has 27 wins to Europe ’ s 14 wins . At the 2021 Ryder Cup , Team USA dominated from the very first shot at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin , winning four of the five sessions and tying the other . It was widely reported as the biggest Ryder Cup blowout of historic proportions . Team USA 19 – Europe 9 matched the largest margin of victory since 1975 . Can Team USA repeat this year ? Well , as they say , “ Rome wasn ’ t built in a day ,” it will take Team USA three days of unmatched golf .
Gather your golfing compadres and make your own Ryder Cup challenge . Make a weekend of it , changing the play formats like a Ryder Cup . Or , check with your local golf course — many will host some variation of a Ryder Cup tournament .
Most importantly , don ’ t be SAD ; take advantage of the cooler golf season and tee it up at a few courses you did not play this year . New scenery and challenges make golf fun . As they say , “ Variety is the spice of life ,” so add some variety to your golf game and conquer new challenges . It could elevate your game and enjoyment .
Play more , have fun , and practice good golf etiquette .
