April Showers bring May Greens
It’ s May, and that means April showers and longer daylight hours bring us greener fairways and healed greens after the March and April aerification. Greens should now roll great— ready for you to drain those forty-foot putts for eagle. Bentgrass fairways are plush and green( Zoysia takes a bit longer), no bad lies— unless we’ re in the rough. It’ s fun to have the ball sitting pretty and ready for a crispy, clean shot at green. Ahh, the smell of freshly cut golf course grass in the morning!
You also know that May means Mother’ s Day. Moms should be celebrated not only on a single day, May 11, but every day. Nevertheless, it’ s a great month to introduce Mom or anyone to golf. Start by taking Mom golfing; she might enjoy fresh air in a beautiful setting. Grab some clubs, take Mom, the daughters, sons, or grandkids golfing, and make a day of it.
Next up, we have Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, so that means a three-day weekend full of golf, and there’ s no better place to play those rounds than the Lake of the Ozarks. It’ s the perfect two-hour drive for avid golfers to tee it up at any of the Lake’ s 12 premier golf courses. See page 24 for a complete guide to Lake area golf courses. Make your weekend golf getaway anytime during the year. Find more information about Lake of the Ozarks Golf Trail golf courses, lodging partners, and Golf Trail stay-and-play packages on page 26. Plan your Memorial Day weekend golf getaway now to get the best tee times.
Want to travel a few hours more to the south? You can’ t beat a getaway to Shangri-La Resort at Monkey Island, OK. Shangri-La has developed into one of the nation’ s top golf destinations. Play 45 Holes of Premier Championship Lakeside Golf without ever leaving the resort. Plus, you can take the entire family for a weekend getaway. Shangri-La’ s new activity park includes outdoor tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball, sand volleyball, fire pits, a fishing pond, and a mini-Fenway Park replica that offers Wiffle ball, providing fun for kids of all ages. Spend the afternoon at the 6,500-square-foot outdoor pool with a splash pad, tanning ledge, and hot tub, or enjoy the food and beverage services. See Shangri-La Resort on page 5, and be sure to watch for our June issue for more about its golf options and the resort.
Remember, as you dust the cobwebs off your clubs and head to the course for the first time this spring –– don’ t take the early season or the first round as a grim outlook for the remainder of the season. You’ ll need time to regain the good swings and develop that feel for your short game— especially from 100 yards to the cup( I know, I was terrible at chipping the first time out this year). With a few more rounds, you will improve and tally lower scores. If not, please take a few lessons— they’ ll cost you a lot less than losing all those expensive ProV1s. Plus, we won’ t need to wait on you as you search for those family heirlooms lost in the weeds. It’ s lost; move on!
Most of all, remember you’ re outdoors, and it’ s a perfect 70-degree spring golf day. Take in the day, the game, and the friends, and enjoy your day on the course. Who knows, you might birdie a few holes or, better yet, eagle the 18th— Sweet!
Enjoy your golf; play well! 6 May 2025 TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE
