Where Golfers Have Tee ’ d It Up for 103Years by Bill Cromwell
The Unity Village Golf Club , founded in 1921 , opened as a 9-hole private course for Unity members . In 2015 , it opened to public play , and ongoing upgrades and additions have been continuous . It ’ s nearly impossible to find a more storied and unique 9-hole course within the Kansas City area . This landmark course with the famous Unity Village tower is just off 350 Hwy and Colbern Road in a picturesque setting 15 miles southeast of downtown Kansas City .
This unique 9-hole course plays 2,937 yards from the blue tees and 2,452 yards from the red tees . It is not a long course ; however , the shortest hole for men or women is a 185-yard par 3 . The course has one par 3 and one par 5 , but from the white tees , you can play two of the par 4s as par 3s and convert it to a par 34 . You will then be playing a 185-yard par 3 , as a 215-yard par 3 , and then another par 3 at 225 yards .
While not extremely long , the course has plenty of challenges for accuracy off the tee to hit the fairway , or you ’ ll be punching shots out from under a tree . The uphill , downhill , and uneven lies will challenge you , as will the small target greens , so you better be accurate with iron shots on approach . There are very few sand bunkers , and the average green is only 3,000 square feet , but they are nearly devoid of ball marks , well-maintained , fast , and fun to play !
The 2018 renovation and expansion of the historic clubhouse included an enlarged nearly 1,000-square-foot pro shop and snack bar . Additionally , a new outdoor deck area was built outside the clubhouse to accommodate up to 48 people — complete with umbrella tables and chairs , a bar rail , and rail-bench seating . The deck and clubhouse expansions are ideal for group golf outings . In 2016 , the course opened a new driving range with both artificial turf and grass teeing areas with targets up to 280 yards . There ’ s also a chipping and putting green where you can warm up before your round .
“ It is more about the atmosphere here ,” said James Burrow , the superintendent and manager of grounds . “ Golfers like coming here because they can come out and enjoy the friendly people who work and play here . I find that if you provide the best course conditions you can , where your golfers feel good about where they ’ re at , what they are playing , and provide great customer service — treat your customers like you want them here — those things all go a long way .” Golfers return to Unity Village Golf Club time and again . It ’ s a fun course to play a quick 9 or a second go-round for 18 .
