TGIS
It ’ s the time of year when diehard golfers emerge from hibernation , dust cobwebs off the clubs , and head to the first tee . Thank God it ’ s spring ( TGIS )! Best of all , daylight saving time begins March 10 , and the spring equinox is March 19 this year , which means more daylight hours for playing more holes — TGIS !
The new golf clubs also hit store shelves this time of year , a highlight for all golfers . Typically , the hype around new club releases is “ more distance .” Not so much this year . This month , writer Eddie Hall introduces us to a few of the top new drivers for 2024 on page 10 . Hall explains that manufacturers have realized the real way to increase driver performance is to increase the forgiveness in drivers . Meaning this year ’ s drivers are all about shot dispersion , hitting it straighter , and not so much on distance hype . Ultimately , manufacturers have focused design elements on hitting the ball straighter by compensating for swing flaws . Now , if you strike the ball on the toe or heel of the club , chances of the ball landing in the fairway are better , plus ample distance results are greater . Of course , AI tech was involved in achieving these new design features and benefits .
The new 2024 clubs look quite impressive , and if they can deliver , they are undoubtedly worth a test drive . Every golfer wants to hit the ball farther and straighter . A friend has a saying that he uses after one complains about every lousy round of golf , no matter the circumstance , “ You should have played better .” The moral to his annoying response is quite applicable — you can have the best equipment known to man , but you still must have a good golf swing to hit the ball straight and far . Seeking lessons and / or a professional club fitting could be a good idea before shopping for new clubs off the rack or internet . Just say ’ n .
While on the topic of playing better , remember , if you have a 10 a . m . tee time , don ’ t pull into the parking lot at 10 a . m . Like the airport , you should arrive at least one hour ahead of your tee time . This gives you time to check in at the pro shop , load your cart , grab some food and drinks , check in with the starter , practice putting , hit some range balls , and be ready for the first tee — on time ! Don ’ t be the guy everyone waits for at the first tee , putting everyone behind . And , for TGIS ’ s sake , never be a “ No Show ” for your tee time . If you ( or your group ) can ’ t make it , call the course and let them know — there are other golfers who want to play and can fill your spot on the tee sheet . Want to play faster and better ? Show up one hour before your tee time and practice before heading to the first tee !
Spring has arrived , so replace last year ’ s grips , buy a dozen new golf balls , and prepare to hit the links .
Thank you for reading our magazine . Enjoy your golf !
