Are You Ready for

Spring Golf ?

It ’ s the time of year when diehard golfers endure winter hibernation and dust cobwebs off the clubs , replace last year ’ s grips , and buy a dozen of the newest tech golf balls in preparation to hit the links . I ’ m more than ready for March 20 , when spring arrives . How about you ?

In a recent conversation with a friend who ’ s a long-time starter at a very busy Kansas City area golf course , I was astounded at the “ no-show ” rate his course experiences — 20-32 ( or more ) golfers per day and at the prime golf times . No self-respecting group of golfers ( or individuals ) should ever be a no-show ! You should be able to determine whether your group will to be able to make your reserved tee time at least a day in advance . If you cannot make it , call the course , and cancel your reservation , opening your spot for other golfers ! That ’ s pretty simple !
Think about that . That ’ s eight foursomes of golfers between 7 a . m . and 10 a . m . who did not show up , did not call the course to open their reserved tee time , and prevented eight other foursomes from golfing at that course , which also lost revenue that day . Don ’ t be a no-show !
While on the topic of “ tee times ,” if you have a 10 a . m . tee time , don ’ t pull into the parking lot at 10 a . m . Like the airport , you should arrive at least one hour ahead of your tee time . This gives you time to check in at the pro shop , load your cart , grab some food and drinks , check in with the starter , practice putting , hit some range balls , and be ready for the first tee — on time ! Don ’ t be the guy everyone is waiting for at the first tee , putting everyone behind . Want to play faster and better ? Show up one hour before your tee time !
I think , by now , we can all agree that the 2021 – 2022 boom golf experienced from “ COVID ,” when people wanted to “ get outdoors ” and away from people , has settled . So , will golf continue to “ boom ” in 2023 ?
Our research about the 2023 golf industry outlook indicates the industry will continue to flourish in 2023 . Tee time reservations and golfers filling courses are predicted to maintain 2021 – 2022 levels . They may even increase if course operators listen to what motivates the public to play more often at their facility . In a January 2023 survey of 500 golfers by lightspeedhq . com , which said in part , “ In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic , understanding how younger golfers interact with the game both on and off the course is crucial . Even though data showed that 33 % of 18 – 34-year-olds played fewer rounds in 2022 , 66 % of golfers surveyed played about the same or more rounds in 2022 than in previous years .” Looking for new ways to motivate , entertain , and retain golfers is becoming more and more critical to driving revenue at courses .
