Awarded Midwest Section PGA Golf Professional of the Year

by Ann E . Butenas , contributing writer

As a member of the Midwest Section PGA since 2013 , Sean Hanna has kick-started the New Year in grand style . Not only was he recently honored as the Section ’ s Golf Professional of the Year , but he is also fully settled into yet another pivotal role in his career : Section President . While it may seem that Hanna , the Director of Golf at Loch Lloyd Country Club in Loch Lloyd , MO , has a full plate , all this responsibility comes naturally to him . First of all , he has an unwavering passion for the game . Secondly , he has a far greater passion for the people he serves within this amazing community of golf professionals , partners , and friends .

The road Hanna took to achieve his current professional status was different from one that might be associated with a traditional golf professional . In fact , unlike many of his peers , Hanna never seriously took up the game until he graduated from college . Shortly after receiving his degree in his native state of New York , Hanna worked at a large resort in Naples , FL . His first job involved parking cars for hotel guests . From there , he became a doorman and then a bellman . At one point , the General Manager decided Hanna was suited to something a bit more satisfying .
“ He offered me the position of liaison for the hotel with its sales department and local golf courses ,” said Hanna , who eagerly took to the task and never looked back . “ Had it not been for him making me a liaison , I am not sure where I would be today .”
Hanna ’ s responsibilities included organizing golf tournaments , which opened the door to getting to know many professionals and getting acquainted with many golf facilities .

“ The hotel eventually built a golf course , and I worked in the cart barn ,” recalled Hanna , who eventually became a supervisor and eventually passed the PAT ( Playing Ability Test ). In total , he spent eight years at Naples Grande Golf Club before pursuing other avenues to enhance his skills . The next leg of his journey included some time in Georgia at St . Ives Country Club in Johns Creek , just outside the Atlanta area .
