But to get to his phone, he had to climb over a bevy of golf carts. Unable to reach him, Colbert said:“ I’ ll have him call you.” And he did three days later, saying I was still a young man( 63) and offering to do the surgery if I wanted to come to San Diego. I didn’ t go west, but I had the surgery and 26 years later, at age 89, I’ m still going strong.

A former Kansas State quarterback and huge Wildcat fan, Colbert became a close friend of Coach Bill Snyder, who probably said it best:“ There is not enough room in a newspaper to share all that Jim meant to us, his community and the world of golf.”
