The Bunker Shot Worth Millions
Another exciting U . S . Open with captivating golf during the final round , both heartbreaking and thrilling to watch . Even if you ’ re not a big DeChambeau fan these days after his PGA TOUR defection to that other league ( me included ), you should , as a golf fan , admire his impressive win after the amazing bunker shot that sealed the deal .
It would have been nice to see McIlroy in the winners ’ circle , but who of us can say we hadn ’ t missed two or three-foot putts when a boatload of skins was on the line ? As much as I cheer for McIlroy to win a major like the U . S . Open , he , frustrated or not , could have at least congratulated DeChambeau for the win , regardless of whether he handed the silver trophy to him on a platter .
Meanwhile , DeChambeau showed some class at his post-win press conference with some kind words for McIlroy , telling media , “ Rory is one of the best to ever play , and being able to fight against a great like that is pretty special . For him to miss that putt , I never would have wished it on anybody . It just happened to play out that way . He will win multiple more major championships , there is no doubt . I think that fire in him is going to continue to grow and I have nothing but respect for how he plays the game of golf . To be honest , when he was climbing up the leaderboard and he was two ahead I was like : ‘ Uh oh , uh oh .’ But luckily things went my way .”
DeChambeau ’ s six-under win also earned him a big payday , raking in $ 4,300,000 , the largest first-place payday in U . S . Open history . In comparison , his 2020 U . S . Open victory netted him $ 2.25 million . McIlroy ’ s five under for second place earned him a $ 2,322,000 payday . Not bad for four days of playing golf ! This year ’ s U . S . Open shelled out a record total purse of $ 21.5 million . The lastplace finisher ( 74th ), Austin Eckroat , earned $ 38,678 .
Even the biggest-name players who missed the cut , such as Woods , Day , Fowler , Mickelson , and Thomas , among many others , received $ 10,000 each for a couple of days of golfing . I should have taken playing on my high school golf team more seriously !
This month , the 152nd edition of The Open Championship will be held July 18 to 21 at Royal Troon ’ s Old Course in South Ayrshire , Scotland . The total prize fund for The Open will be $ 16.5 million , with the winner ’ s share a meager $ 3 million . If DeChambeau repeats and wins The Open , he could surpass his monthly LIV League earnings ( I jest ).
According to Sportsbookreview . com , “ Bryson DeChambeau has finally joined Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy as betting favorites by the 2024 British Open odds from our best golf betting sites as golf ’ s oldest major returns to Royal Troon this summer .”
DraftKings currently has DeChambeau (+ 1200 ), Scottie Scheffler (+ 500 ), and Rory McIlroy (+ 700 ) atop the 2024 British Open oddsboard .
According to oddsmakers , although DeChambeau is now a two-time U . S . Open champion , the advantage could flip to McIlroy for the British Open courses as they may be much less suited to DeChambeau ’ s successes with the U . S . courses .
But can McIlroy recover from his putting woes in time to capture The Open title ? It should be an exciting July to watch who claims The Open trophy and payday . Next up is the Olympic Men ’ s Golf Competition , August 1 - 4 , at Le Golf National in Paris . I ’ ll be watching !
