First Responder Golf Foundation
Providing an outlet for first responders to cope with mental health issues through the game of golf , First Responder Golf Foundation is a 501 ( c ) 3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to raise awareness of PTSD in the first responder professions .
� To further spread mental health awareness , Steve Pope and other KCK First Responders have manned a booth at the Kansas City Golf Show since 2021 . “ We have a lot of people stop by ,” said Pope . Pope says talking with the public and consoling families after the tragic death of a fellow first responder can sometimes be the worst part of his job .
Steve Pope ( photo above ) is the founder and president of the First Responder Golf Foundation . He has 30 years in the Fire Service and 28 years with the Kansas City Kansas Fire Department . He has held the rank of Captain since 2011 . His mission with the foundation is to spread awareness about mental health issues in the first responder professions while also providing an outlet through golf . Pope uses golf to decompress and recalibrate and wanted to share his passion for the game to help his first responder brothers and sisters . This foundation was a calling for Pope to share his story and promote the awareness mission that PTSD in the first responder professions is real .
� Firefighters , police , EMTs , and others were on hand for the initial First Responders Golf Foundation tournament . The first event in 2021 at Dub ’ s Dread drew a sold-out field of 36 teams . It has consistently filled up each year since .
