Going Strong at 90
This month, we pay tribute to our esteemed feature writer, Alan Hoskins, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday in June. Despite his advanced age, he continues to inspire and captivate me as an exceptional person and golf writer. He should be in the Missouri and Kansas Golf Hall of Fame for the hundreds of golf articles he’ s written over his career.
I’ ve advocated since 2019 and am now on a seven-year mission to have golf writer Alan Hoskins inducted into a Missouri or Kansas sports-related Hall of Fame. Hoskins began writing for this magazine in 2007( 19 years ago) and has written nearly 500 feature stories about nearly every golf course in Kansas City, the Lake of the Ozarks, Branson, and eastern Kansas. He has also written countless profile articles about Midwest Section PGA professionals, PGA TOUR professionals, and several golfing celebrities.
He also wrote three books, including the only history of the Kansas City Chiefs, titled“ Warpaths.” He wrote“ The Woodlands” and became the only back-to-back winner of the Greyhound Track Operators’ national writing award. He also wrote a third book,“ The History of Wolf Creek Golf Club,” and an in-depth article for this magazine detailing the history of PGA Golf in Kansas City.
At age 82, Alan Hoskins got his 3rd Ace in October 2018.
He had three holes-in-one over a 10-month span. His first came at age 81. He continued playing golf until earlier this year. He says his legs, balance, and energy are not what they once were. Hoskins contracted polio at age four, leaving one leg slightly shorter and smaller than the other. However, polio did not define him. In his youth, he played high school baseball and basketball. Later in life, he caught the golf bug. Today, at age 90, his love of the game and of writing about it remains as strong as ever.
In addition to all the golfrelated article interviews, Hoskins has traveled the world. Over 31 trips— just about every country in Europe; Egypt, Africa, India, Thailand, China, Japan, Turkey, Jordan, Israel, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Australia, and New Zealand. On Hoskins’ trip to Machu Picchu in Peru, which is perched high in the mountains, the only way up is to walk. At age 81( give or take), Hoskins made it to the top. Remember, an aftereffect of polio can make walking on a golf course a challenge, yet he made the long, mountainous hike to Machu Picchu. Think about that for a minute.
At age 79, he played the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, UK, and interviewed its famous professional golf caddie, Dave Lindsay, better known as“ Badger.”
