The D G DAYS

Well , it ’ s August , and the summer seems to be again blowing by faster than we can tee it up for another round . Did I ( or you ) play enough rounds thus far ? For me , Nope ! That dang work thing got in my way . I vow to play more in August and September . If I don ’ t , I ’ ll be whining about it again in the October issue . No one wants that !

On a good note , the fairways are much greener this year compared to last , thanks to all the June and July rainfall that kept golf course irrigation ponds and lakes relatively full . It ’ s good for course owners who haven ’ t needed to buy as much water this year . That can get expensive fast !
However , August is known as the “ Dog Days of Summer ,” so will it be a blazing hot month or wet again like most of July ?
If you ’ re a The Old Farmer ’ s Almanac believer , almanac . com / summer-weather-forecast says , “ The 2024 Summer temperatures , on average , will be hotter than normal from New England through the Atlantic Corridor , in Florida and the Deep South , through Texas and the Midwest , and on to California . In terms of rainfall , much of the country has normal to below-normal rainfall , especially in New England and the Midwest . However , the West Coast , Texas , and the Atlantic Corridor will see normal to above-normal rainfall .” Its weather map shows Hot and Dry for Missouri and the eastern half of Kansas .
So , it sounds like August could be hotter than usual ( Dog Days ) and rainfall normal to below normal for golfers in the Midwest . That is if you believe the weatherperson .
Most weather sources suggest that 2024 could rival 2023 for being the hottest year on record . That ’ s scary ! But that seems to have been the forecast trend for the last several years –– each year , hotter and hotter . Many experts suggest that climate change is mainly attributed to emissions from the mass amount of golf ball manufacturing . Going on to say that if golfers would just take more lessons and learn how to hit the golf ball in the fairway and then onto the green , rather than losing balls in the woods and lakes , they could cut emissions by half and reverse climate change .
Most golfers agree ; however , surveys show that golfers prefer to just tee-it-up and play golf rather than spending time on the range practicing or seeking out golf lessons . “ So what if I lose six or eight balls during a round –– they ’ re sold by the dozen ,” said one surveyed golfer . “ When I lose the entire dozen , I ’ ll buy more .”
Have fun golfing during the Dog Days , but when you see staff hosing down a green , be patient . Don ’ t fire a golf shot at them while they ’ re on the green trying to keep it nice ( and alive ) for you . Let them finish , then hit your approach shot . While waiting , make sure you are staying cool and well-hydrated .
“ In golf , the customs and etiquette and decorum are as important as the rules of play .” ~ Bobby Jones
