Hooray, It’ s Masters Month

Welcome to April, my favorite time of year— it’ s Masters Month! I’ ve advocated for Masters’ Friday in April to be declared a National Holiday for over 10 years, yet no official action has occurred. I’ m tired of waiting. So, I proclaimed Masters’ Friday, April 10, an official national holiday. Whether that will carry any official weight remains to be seen. Nevertheless, thank you very much for observing the holiday!

The 90th Masters Tournament will be played from April 9 – 12 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, GA. It’ s my favorite time of year since the Masters Tournament is the first of the men’ s four major golf championships in 2026. Following that, we have the PGA Championship, May 14 – 17; the U. S. Open, June 18 – 21; and The Open Championship, July 16 – 19. Then comes the FedEx Cup TOUR Championship, held August 24 – 30( see more on page 12).
Will the 90th Masters Tournament deliver the same over-thetop excitement as the 89th did? Wow, watching Rory McIlroy hit magnificent shots when there was no alternative giving him two birdies, sending him to the 18th hole with a one-shot lead. Then on the 18th, he miss-hit a wedge into the bunker and wound up missing a five-foot par putt for a 1-over 73 and tying Justin Rose both at-1, sending them to a sudden-death playoff— the first Masters playoff in eight years. On the first playoff hole, Rose missed his birdie putt, and McIlroy drained his to secure his first and emotional Masters victory. McIlroy had already won the U. S. Open, The Open Championship, and two PGA Championships before this victory. With his Masters’ win, his 17th attempt, McIlroy became the sixth player, and the first European, to complete the modern career Grand Slam. McIlroy also became the third player, after Tiger Woods in 2001 and Scottie Scheffler in 2024, to win the Masters and The Players Championship in the same calendar year.
“ This is my 17th time here, and I started to wonder if it would ever be my time,” McIlroy said in the Butler Cabin post-event interview.“ I think the last 10 years coming here with the burden of the Grand Slam on my shoulders and trying to achieve that... there was a lot of pent-up emotion that just came out on that 18th green.”
How will you spend your Masters’ weekend? Find a local course hosting a Masters tournament, shoot an extremely low score, and take home the big winning purse of $ 100( in pro shop credits)! Celebrate like you’ re the winner being interviewed in the Butler Cabin at Augusta sporting that green jacket— don’ t forget to wave at the screaming fans cheering your big win. Well, at least it’ s fun to pretend!
I have a good friend named Tim Masters. We grew up together and, even though we don’ t play golf as often as we’ d like, we still manage to squeeze in a round or two whenever we can. Now, Tim is absolutely bonkers about golf, especially during April. He can’ t stop talking about it. While, he’ s never said it out loud, I sense he secretly thinks The Masters tournament was named after him! I think pretending is okay. If he’ d just stop wearing his Masters logoed green blazer to the course all the time! Just kidding, Tim!
While at your pretend Masters tournament, please remember, you won’ t be competing for $ 4 million in prize money, so try to keep a good pace of play. In doing so, we’ ll all make it home in time to watch the final round and see that green Masters blazer slipped on the 2026 champion.
Happy Masters Month— Tim too!
