Bill Cromwell , Editor-in-Chief Best " Bogie " Ever !
Our August 2003 issue featured a Tap Ins News story about former Unity Village Superintendent Tom Poppa saying goodbye to Fred , his canine companion for 15 years .
Consoling Tom , he and I talked about Victoria ’ s and my best friend Bogie , a Jack Russel , and his health challenges as he reached age 18 .
Sadly , our beloved buddy and companion , Bogie , passed away on
November 27 , 2023 . When Victoria and I talk to family and friends about what Bogie meant to us , we also reflect on how much the readers of this magazine loved him . He had become our mascot / celebrity of sorts ever since we launched the “ Where ’ s Bogie ” Photo of the Month contest in 2009 . At every golf show or event we attended , readers would ask , “ Where ’ s Bogie .” When we did bring him to events , Bogie was treated like a celebrity — everyone
wanted to pick him up and pet him . Bogie
Guarding the sidewalk . graciously accepted the praise as any esteemed celebrity would .
While Bogie did enjoy his downtime , cuddling up on the couch next to Birdie , Angel , and Victoria ( even me on occasion ), truth be known , Bogie was a very energetic critter that hated to be held and didn ’ t care for anyone messing up his fur — he would much rather you cut him loose so he could race off and chase down that squirrel or bird , which he often did , and very fast !
He was the King of the backyard where no foreign varmints would survive . He patrolled his territory with vigor , including the sidewalk in front of our house — a fence between it , where he would make himself known to anyone walking . Despite his size , you could not ask for a better guard dog , and his bodybuilder physique made him quite intimidating . He would also chase down a ball thrown in the yard lightning-fast for as long as you could throw it .
He was the strongest dog we ’ ve ever known — right up until his final moments of life — tough as nails , he fought to live . His old body simply said , “ It ’ s time .” Bogie was 18 ; our veterinarian told us that made him 90 years old in dog years .
According to jackrussellterrierdog . com , “ A Jack Russell ’ s life span can realistically be 13-16 years and some having the potential to live as long as 17 . Depending on the specific characteristics of an individual dog , it is theoretically possible for them to live up to 17 years of age . This is rare , however , and not very common .”
Bogie , living to age 18 , was indeed rare in every way , and he was a celebrity to boot ! The amount of joy that our pets bring us is amazing . They are family members and friends who make coming home from work after a stressful day a lot less stressful . As I told Tom when he said goodbye to Fred , “ It ’ s like any family member or old friend who passes on ; we cherish the life-long fond memories and will always miss them deeply . Ultimately , we find our peace in knowing that our treasured friend now rests in peace , and we carry our memories forever .”
Rest well , Bogie ; you warmly touched thousands , and we will miss you dearly . We have no doubt he is joyfully chasing a critter on the other side .
