March 2014 What is hosting What it takes to make your website pages visible on the web. Now that’s not a big deal. Once you’re ready with your html and script files you need to transfer them to a webserver using a FTP client like FileZilla. A webserver is a computer which is always ON and is always connected to the internet so that files present in the server may be accessed 24X7 through any computer connected to the internet. Each webserver has a unique domain name which is alternative to its IP address, so before you can host the your pages you need to buy a domain name from a domain name provider like GoDaddy or BigRock. The domain name is the address to your webserver which is mandatory else nobody will know where to locate your files hosted. Now if its all done from creating html files to buying a domain name finally you need to host your files to a webserver so that the world can see it, this process is called hosting. Depending upon your budget and requirement there can be variations in types of hosting. May be your business is small and you can not buy a whole server system which costs a lot more than your budget but on the other hand you want to have a website of your own, don’t worry, there is always an option available. Lets have a look on types of hosting. Web Hosting Types Shared Hosting In shared hosting you are not given any server but you’re given some space in the server which is shared by other users also. Your site is placed on a server with other websites to share the resources. • • • • Its affordable and basic hosting is like having an apartment in a flat Private name servers are not allowed in shared hosting It is not suitable for a website which may incur a lot of web traffic, your website may have a slow access You get limited space generally few gigabytes to host your pages thus it is never suitable to manage databases Virtual Private Hosting • VPS hosting is very much like a dedicated server, but costs less and share the resources, its like owning a flat in a building • You can host multiple websites and also given email managing service • You can install advanced software and its suitable to manage databases with limited traffic. Recommended for more advanced users, and those needing to install specific packages or software not provided by shared hosting. Your website is placed on a server with other websites, like shared hosting, but usually there are less websites per server and it includes root or admin access to its own operating system installation in a virtualized environment. Dedicated Hosting When you get a dedicated server, your website get access to the full server, since it's not shared with any other users. Dedicated hosting includes full root or admin access. It is the recommended route for websites with lots of visitors (traffic) or custom requirements which are not available in a shared hosting environment. But be ready to expend higher. • Dedicated hosting is like owning your own home • You can host any number of websites with any type of services and you are responsible to buy all the hardware requirements to host a website.
