If we consider technology on a different, fundamental level, such as access to medicine, it helps to illustrate what influence technology has on us. Without medicine, it is likely that many diseases that caused pandemics such as Small Pox, Polio, or even more recently, Ebola, could have ended the human race.

To conclude, we offer summarizing thoughts from Kevin Kelly (2010), “Technology is selfish, technology is generous, that conflict [and] tension will be with us forever, sometimes it wants to do what it wants to do, and sometimes it will do things for us.” This quote helps illustrate that although we are ultimately in control of technology, and therefore our future, we must also accept that there is an element of fate that is included.

We know that technology has brought us to where we are today, and we must trust it to take us to where we need to be tomorrow.

To me, my definition of technology is now more broad and elaborate. I felt the article “Defining Technology” by Adam Thierer (2016) gathered a variety of different definitions for technology that influenced my current definition. Firstly, this article began by quoting two dictionary definitions of “technology” which focused largely on science and scientific innovations.

Moreover, this article quoted Thomas P. Hughes (2004) who stated “Technology is messy and complex. It is difficult to define and understand”. This definition particularity stood out to me because I didn’t realize how much trouble I would have defining technology, and how comprehensive the possible definition could be.

Moving forward through the module, I must say that the video “Microsoft- What is Technology” particularly stood out to me. This short video featuring emotional responses to technology was quite moving. I felt that it really added emotion to technology- and changed my views of technology to include a new element: human emotion.

After completing this module, if I were to sum up my definition of technology in 3 words I would say: Scientific, complicated, and emotional. Many of my initial statements still stand. In all honesty, I do still feel that there are some aspects of life that technology has taken away from us. However, I fully feel that all of the technological advances we have created as a society are influencing our lives positively, and will continue to do so.
