So, moving forward, let’s take an alternative view on what technology is. We know technology is science. But what happens when technology means more than that?
As described by W. Brian Arthur (2009), “…technology [is] the entire collective of devices… available to a culture”. This is one definition that many of our readers can probably agree is their first and foremost beliefs of technology fundamentally is. Technology is devices. It is our smart phone and our laptop. It is the apps in our phone, and the systems we game on. When we think of technology, the first thing that comes to our mind is the devices we feel we cannot live without.
If we are going to classify technology as the devices that are available to us, we must think of the items that are less obvious. As little as 50 years ago, if you asked an individual what technology meant to them, they may have answered with microwaves or television. Moving back 100 years, answers may have included automobiles, radios, and even electric ovens. From this perspective, we can conclude that technology has meant different things to us at different times (Cybernation Class Notes, 2017).
