Technology, Affecting Us Now and Then May 2014 | Page 30

Entertaining Technology

Technology has helped us many ways. One is even in the entertainment business. It has come a long way, starting in black and white with no sound to Computer-Generated Imagery. Movies are famous for giving emotions to the viewer, from scary to funny to romantic. All of these emotions have helped us get through times that were troubling us. So we want these movies to look good and there are many tools of technology to help. Movies all started when the camera was first made. All a camera could do was take pictures, but when the film started to take pictures faster, it was able to capture movement.

The camera wasn’t able to capture audio in these times, but most people didn’t care. The movement was enough to reveal the emotions. When our technology became greater, audio was able to be recorded. This was a big step changer because acting was required for more. The actors now had to dig deep and show emotion through their voices. But there was another even greater job that was created. The costume designer now had to find color appealing and quiet clothes. Clothes are one of the biggest pieces of tech that we use today.

Clothes are what we use to represent ourselves. If we wanted a new personality, it can easily be attained through clothes. So in the movie business, this was a big thing. Of course another great tool is the pencil. Many movies made, especially Disney, had made some hand drawn films like 101 Dalmatians. With Walt Disney’s new techniques and skills, he made animation styled pictures. (For more on history of pencil see pg.) But around that time, the computer was getting smaller and better.

The next craze was then CGI. Disney was famous for this next portion, for they created a movie entirely CGI. Toy Story was the first fully CGI movie and was a big hit. CGI started becoming more commonly used for its ability to make something happen without filming it. The Matrix is a good example of CGI. The characters never actually shot a bullet or dodged them either. While most of it was filmed, CGI brought the things that weren’t accessible to the screen.

And of course, you can’t forget George Lucas. He had made great movies, such as Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones. Indiana Jones had melting faces while the ark was exposed. Star Wars had light sabers and blaster bullets, but could only be made with CGI. Jurassic Park had many dinosaurs in it, but using a prop would have made them look horrible and robotic. Speaking of which, props are the most useful things in a movie.

Without these props, movies can’t move forward. Say there was a movie on a haunted house. The actors then gear up to take on the ghosts, but all of the gear would be a prop. Every non-fully CGI movie has a prop in it. It is what makes the character and gives him an extra skill based on what his prop is. Movies have come a long way, and I expect that there won’t be much left to do to a movie. We’ve had movies pop out with 3D, but what else can make a movie better? Is the movie industry finally out of new ideas?
