Technological Revolution 1 | Page 6

gricultural revolution in Britain was one of the major causes of industrial revolution, resulting in tremendous growth of economy in Britain and the world. It began in the mid-17th to 19th centuries and first started in Britain. During this period of time, the agricultural productions raised unprecedentedly and increased the British populations. Thus, it contributed to the economy as a country's GDP is commonly based on agriculture and plays a small fraction of the country's GDP. There were several factors that lead Britain to this agricultural revolution. Firstly, one of the major factor was the new farming technology. The new seed drill that was invented changes the way the farmers used to grow the crops. For instance, it can improve seed germination and reduce amount of seed that is used in planting because it distributes evenly. This therefore increases the efficiency of the growing yields and reduces the money in labours and seeds, as a result of technological change. The intensity production had created 16.6m of population in 1850 with fewer resources (Seed).

Enclosure of Farms

Besides, the enclosure of farms that enclosures the small landholdings to create a bigger farm so that all farms are owned by individual owners. This would increase their agricultural efficiency and also bring more land into agricultural use because more wealthy owners bought land from individual farmers for further development. This had affected 30% of agricultural land in England.

Crop Rotation

The use of new crop rotation allowed the farms to keep the nitrogen in soil and used it for another type of crops. Besides, selective breeding had been used during that time to eliminate most diseases so that the animals would last longer and farmers were allowed to

choose the specific favourable traits of animals or plants to favour consumer's want. Thus, 20% of arable lands in England decreased by 4% in 1871 because of the new techniques and machines that allowed fallow land to be reduced and more lands were being used effectively. This shows how the discovery of new techniques and biotechnology benefits the country and economy.
