"Let’s start with HISTORICAL ELEVATOR “Asansör”" says Sarp and opens a brochure and then he starts to read the explanation about elevator: The building is in İzmir’s Karataş quarter, within the boundaries of the metropolitan district of Konak. It was built in 1907 as a work of public service by a wealthy Jewish banker Nesim Levi Bayraklıoğlu, in order to ease the 155 step stair passage from the Mithatpaşa Street to Halilrıfatpaşa Street. First the elevator was working with water but then in 1985, it was activated to run on electricity by the municipality. The building was restored in 1992. The bottom entrance of the elevator is from Dario Moreno Street. The street has Sakız type houses and there was a statue of the Jewish descent Turkish guitarist, pianist and actor Dar io Moreno. Today, there is a restaurant-cafe by the Metropolitan Municipality of İzmir. (pic1) "HEY! Are you hungry? There is a beautiful cafe here. They watch the beautiful scenery and İrem reads the article about clock tower: “Saat Kulesi” CLOCK TOWER located at Konak Square and has become the symbol of the city. Famous clock tower is on the right at the entrance to Izmir’s Kemeraltı Bazaar in Konak. The clock tower was designed by the Levantine French architect Raymond Charles Père, was born and spent his entire life in Izmir. He built the tower in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Abdülhamid II’s. The tower has carving of a crescent moon and star on its four sides and rests on a circular, base and the platform where the tower is based is lowered from the rest of the area. It has palm trees on north and south directions of the structure. The tower is provided with 12 water taps, 3 in each direction. The tower uses a technology called desalination by which it collects sea water from Aegean Sea and gives out pure drinkable water through the outlet pipes.
