DISASTER RECOVERY
Planning For Prompt Disaster Recovery With Data Centers
BY RUSSELL QUINN
This past year was a whirlwind in every sense of the word . Hurricane Beryl swept through our state , leaving a trail of destruction and disruption in its wake . It was a stark reminder that life and nature are unpredictable . For businesses , it highlighted the need to have a solid disaster recovery plan in place .
Hurricane Beryl served as a wake-up call for all Texas business owners , reminding us why it ’ s so important to have a comprehensive and up-to-date disaster recovery plan . Reflecting on this summer ’ s events , it ’ s clear that those without a plan were left vulnerable while those who prepared were able to weather the storm with minimal to no disruption .
THE CONSEQUENCES OF ILL-PREPAREDNESS
One of our clients , an architecture firm , faced a particularly tough situation during the hurricane . Their building and the servers contained in it were without power for days . This had a cascading effect on their ability to meet critical deadlines in a delay so costly that they lost out on a project that would have made up a significant portion of their annual revenue . However , this was more than just a loss of revenue ; it was a blow to their reputation and a missed opportunity to grow their business .
What makes this situation even more disheartening is that it could have been avoided . We had advised the firm several times in the past to move their server to our data center , but they declined . Had they heeded our advice , their server and business operations would have been secure and accessible even during the power outage . Not only would they have been able to perform on their lost contract but the company would have thrived in the face of adversity .
Unfortunately , this incident is just one of many where a client or soon-to-be client has reached a crisis state and we ’ ve had to step in . From hurricanes to ice storms , we ’ ve seen it all , and each time , we ’ ve learned that being proactive
