Ioften joke that we have four people on our IT team , but sometimes we need four-and-a-half people ,” Chris Davenport , the IT director at GeoSouthern Energy , said with a laugh . “ That ’ s when we go to Quinn Technology .” For decades , GeoSouthern Energy has been transforming the oil and gas industry by buying , flipping , and selling key assets such as land , wells , and more . But it was just 12 years ago — when Chris was hired — that the company began building an internal IT department instead of relying solely on outsourced IT support .
“ We had no IT department when I started ,” explained Chris , “ but the organization was growing fast . In my first two years , we went from 50 [ employees ] to 200 employees .” As the company scaled , Chris did his best to support its growth in coordination with the then-IT service provider , but it quickly became clear that the third-party provider wasn ’ t able to accommodate the rapid expansion . So he decided to take charge and make a change . But the plan wasn ’ t to get rid of a managed service provider ( MSP ) altogether . It was to find the right one .
