ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

The Promise And Peril Of Artificial Intelligence : A Practical Perspective

BY RUSSELL QUINN

AI is often surrounded by hyperbole . For some , it ’ s a sci-fi villain like Skynet from The Terminator , ready to take over the world . For others , it ’ s a magic wand that will solve all business challenges overnight . Neither perspective is accurate .

At its core , AI is a tool — a sophisticated one , but a tool nonetheless . It doesn ’ t “ think ” in the way humans do . Instead , it analyzes vast amounts of data and uses algorithms to predict outcomes , find patterns , and generate content . Its power lies in its ability to process and synthesize data faster than any human could .
Think of AI as an extremely efficient assistant that draws on years of accumulated knowledge . However , like any tool , it ’ s only as good as the materials it ’ s given and the framework within which it operates .
THE DANGERS OF BLIND TRUST IN AI
One of the most overlooked dangers of AI is its tendency to produce “ hallucinated ” results when it encounters incomplete or insufficient data . Let me illustrate with an example : Imagine you ’ re asking an AI for a list of the five most influential books on the proliferation of nuclear weapons . If the system can only find four , it might invent a fifth to meet your request .
This phenomenon isn ’ t hypothetical . A lawyer in California once relied on AI to research legal precedents for a case . When the AI couldn ’ t find enough relevant cases , it fabricated them . The result ? A shutdown of the court ’ s library system and major repercussions for the lawyer .
This is a cautionary tale for anyone using AI , a reminder to fact-check everything . AI tools can be incredibly convincing in presenting their outputs , but they aren ’ t infallible .
