SONGWRITING WITH SARAH BARRIOS
• Let’ s talk a bit about your songwriting process. How does a song usually develop – do you first start with the lyrics, melody, chord progression, or something else? How long does it usually take you to write a song?
// It really depends on what I ' m feeling at the moment. Usually I have a concept and then I fiddle with chords until I find something that expresses the concept and go from there, but I also do it the other way around, where I start with a progression and then just start saying random things until I find a melody and then the words flow through. Time wise it can differ between being done in an hour to being done in two days. As long as the groove and concept feel strong to me, the writing process moves rather quickly. //
• Who are your favorite current songwriters or musicians?
// Definitely Allen Stone! He is a soul singer who was just recently signed to Capitol Records and I personally think he ' s unbelievable. He writes about things like freedom and the music industry and speaks about things that you just don ' t hear people talking about in today ' s music and I think it ' s quite refreshing. Aside from his lyrics, instrumentally the sounds are just so lively. Even when he ' s singing a ballad, you really just feel that rawness in the music and it makes everything, upbeat or not, have a very personal and just an all-around good vibe. //
