COLOR | HAVENFIELD It’s been a hot minute since emo was last an exciting genre, but there seems to be a renaissance happening with bands like The Hotelier and now, Havenfield. This Purchase, NY fivesome segues from dreamy and reverberating to blistering and crunchy, and back again, with enviable grace. Their guitar parts are excellently written from top to bottom. And although Tony Pitkin is the kind of vocalist who sings the word “me” and makes it rhyme with the word “pain,” he also makes the more intense lyrical moments sound like they’re just tearing their way out of him. His fierce and anguished performance puts it over the top: “Color” is one of the best underground releases I’ve heard this year. PAW EP | SWIMMING WITH BEARS Like fellow bear-named rockers Grizzly Bear, these Austinites know how to do a mix that’s atmospheric and yet feels raw and organic.
