This little giant certainly has a huge attitude. He does not enjoy being handled and will readily bite. He even“ barks like a little dog” to show his displeasure when being moved to clean his enclosure. Due to this sound being emitted in their natural environment, local people often refer to it as“ the devil in the trees”. No handling is ever attempted without wearing gloves to protect our hands, as his bite can be quite painful!
This species can live up to 20 years in a captive environment. Racky however has passed this milestone with flying colours, as he is already an astonishing 26 years of age!
Being old in gecko years, this does not mean that you can’ t“ teach an old dog some new tricks”. After all these years, Racky has learnt to open his enclosure! Using the suckers on his feet, he would slide the glass to go on his walkabout. Twice he has gone AWOL! Providing much enrichment( and off course raising stress levels of his caregivers), who had to search for him in the enclosed area from which he escaped. Unfortunately for him and fortunately for us, he is now grounded, as his enclosure has been fitted with a lock in the interim.
This little giant may be cold blooded, but he certainly has the capacity to warm your heart!
