27 Ball pythons feed mainly on small mammals such as mice and small rats. Younger snakes have been observed feeding on birds. Being in a captive environment, Sitka is currently fed 2 mice every second week (in winter they are fed once every two weeks due to them going through hibernation and becoming less active. In summer they are fed once a week). Being a cold blooded animal and due to their slow metabolism, they don’t require food on a daily basis. Once fully grown, they average at approximately 1,2m in length. Quite a small little python compared to other species of pythons found! Even though ball pythons are the smallest python in Africa and may not reach an impressive size like other python species, their huge personali- ty makes up for the deficit. These little characters make good first time pets for the avid reptile keeper. Ball Pythons can reach an age of up to 30 years in captivity! Due to their popularity in the pet trade, breeders have come up with some impressive morphs of this magnificent animal. 27
