ST. GEORGE’S LADIES’ GUILD
report written by Dorothy Thistlethwaite
It was a pleasure to return to our meetings on 6th February and to catch
up with all the news!
We all remarked on the improved quality of the lighting in the Pennington
Room - before we didn’t know whether the lights were on or off! - thank
you.
During February, Jean Mease came to the Guild and spoke about Derian
House, a children’s hospice based in Lancashire.
Derian House is renowned throughout the region as being at the
forefront of children’s palliative and respite care - clearly a deserving
project and something that caused a lot of interest among members.
On 20th February our speaker was Linda Cronin and her subject was
’memories’ - it was a really enjoyable evening and caused much
discussion among members as people recalled their own memories.
Speaking of Linda - on behalf of all our members, we wish her and her
family every happiness as they move to Cheltenham.
Eileen Jones was our speaker on 6th March - she is always interesting!
The title of her talk was ’One over the eight’. Sounds interesting? It was!
During the evening Eileen explained the origin of everyday sayings. She
started with ’an axe to grind’ - this was connected with Abraham Lincoln; a
traveller called at Lincoln’s place, sharpened his tools and walked out
without paying! As Eileen explained the sayings they made a lot of sense
and, again, we had an enjoyable evening.
