ST. GEORGE’S DAY - 23rd APRIL
St George, the patron saint of England, is also the patron saint of
some other countries, such as Portugal, Germany, Palestine, Ethiopia, and
Croatia.
We actually know very little about him; however, we do know he was born
in Turkey, at a place called Cappadocia and he lived in the third century.
His parents were Christians; their faith in Jesus Christ was important to
them and shaped the way they brought up their son, George. Thus, he
was brought up in a Christian home.
When he grew up George became a Roman soldier, eventually becoming
a high ranking officer in the Roman army – he was renowned for his
bravery in battle. Such was his courage he became a tribune; however, he
eventually abandoned one army (the Roman army) for another army (the
army of God). This was a big step for George; as a Christian, living
wholeheartedly for Christ was important to him; his faith shaped his life.
And when he heard that the pagan Roman Emperor, Diocletian, was
persecuting Christians because of their faith, George pro ѕ
