Archbishop Justin waited outside the cathedral’s west door, while inside
the Dean of Canterbury Cathedral read out a letter from the Queen,
Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
This letter authorised the Dean to greet the Archbishop and, in the
famous tradition, the Archbishop then struck the door three times with
his pastoral staff, and the Dean opened the door to greet him!
The Archbishop then swore an oath of faithfulness to the statutes of the
Church of England and an oath of faithfulness to the Queen, using the
ancient Canterbury Gospels, brought to England by St Augustine in 597.
The Archbishop is then enthroned on his seats, marking the core of the
ceremony.
Interestingly, the date of the ceremony, 21st March, is the day when the
church remembers the martyrdom of Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of
Canterbury, in 1556.
