TEAM 4201 (Feb. 2014) | Page 33

Mission Statement: Stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in the quality of life, and demonstrate the value of diversity.

Adriana Henriquez, a former FRC member currently majoring in Aerospace Engineering at UC Davis, began the SWE club at Da Vinci Science in 2012.

“I definitely think FRC inspired the creation of SWE. I feel that we had, and continue to have, some very strong females on the team. SWE was created to encourage girls to get involved in extracurriculars, like FRC, and to explore math, science, and engineering-related courses, such as PLTW. The purpose of this is to encourage and inspire girls to challenge themselves academically, and to allow themselves to explore their creative and intellectual capabilities without fearing any boundaries. Although SWE in itself implies a reach toward the science and technological fields, I think it's far more than that. I think that in encouraging girls to explore their capabilities, they are able to become well-rounded individuals which is something that I feel is very important. An FRC team is more than just a group of people that are good at designing, building, or programming. It's a team of individuals with diverse interests, goals, and personalities. Everyone has something unique that they can contribute to every part of FRC if they allow themselves to explore their abilities in areas that they are unfamiliar with, strong in, or areas where they may need improvement, whether it be in the build team, documentation team, the spirit team, or a combination of any. It's all about encouraging girls or anyone really, to surpass challenges and boundaries.” -Adriana

Da Vinci Science’s SWE participates in engineering challenges and visits campuses such as CalTech, Cal Poly Pomona, and UCLA. Although the club is still small in regards to how many girls are currently members, it grows in numbers every year.
