Teaching is an art, but it’s a science
too. The best teachers are constantly
experimenting with new approaches to
their subject and their students, and
then reflecting on what went well and
what could be improved. Each of us
has within us a theory of what makes
good teaching and every time we enter
a class we put that theory to the test.
However, not all of us have taken the
time to put our personal theory into
words. We’re often so busy thinking
about the next lesson plan that we
don’t have the time or energy to really

articulate why we do some of the
things we do. However, during this past
spring semester a cohort of faculty
from a wide variety of departments
made the time to really reflect on what
they do as teachers and why they do it.
