Spring 2014 Edition
(continued)
As a result of the workshop, I’ve
restructured the learning modules by topic
rather than week to better focus student
attention on the learning objectives. I’ve
added Getting Ready discussions to provide
a setting that prepares students to read and
learn mathematics on their own. I’ve added
Concepts and Vocabulary quizzes to
encourage development of a mathematical
vocabulary that allows students to express
mathematical ideas. I’ve added Show Me
assignments that require work and
explanations, peer review, and reflection.
These new activities are designed to help
students focus on deep rather than shallow
learning as described by Dr. Steven Chew in
his video series How to Get the Most Out of
Studying. They also give me an opportunity
to provide students with more timely and
meaningful feedback.
It’s still too early to tell what the full impact
of the redesign will be, but I’ve already
noticed a much higher level of student
engagement and interaction. Hopefully,
higher retention and success rates will
follow. For information about upcoming
APPQMR workshops contact Olysha
Magruder. To explore one of my courses
before and after the redesign, send a
request to Steve Grosteffon.
If you'd like to pick Steve's brain about his use of tools in Canvas,
come to the workshop "Collaborations in Canvas" February 24 or 25.
