Students shared their reflections in pairs, discussed them in their international groups or submitted them as short individual responses.
Final message: Democracy depends not only on the rights people enjoy but also on their willingness to participate, listen to others, question injustice and take responsibility for protecting the freedom and dignity of all.
Methodological value
The main strength of Traces of Freedom lies in its combination of place-based learning, historical inquiry and intercultural collaboration. The local environment becomes a learning resource, while students take responsibility for investigating questions, selecting information and presenting conclusions.
The activity also develops several transferable skills. Students practise research, source evaluation, questioning, interviewing, teamwork and digital storytelling. Most importantly, they begin to understand historical heritage as something that requires interpretation rather than passive observation. The video task provides an opportunity to transform information into a meaningful message for an audience. It also encourages students to connect historical knowledge with their own perspectives without confusing personal opinion with historical evidence.
