The Seeing Eye

The fourth graders ’ annual service project is a read-a-thon in support of the Seeing Eye Foundation , which breeds , raises , and trains Seeing Eye dogs for blind people . Through this project , the boys learned that the foundation ’ s mission is to help blind people to be independent in their daily lives . In addition to raising funds via the read-a-thon , the boys created and displayed posters promoting the project , made announcements in homerooms throughout the school to ask for “ Pennies for Puppies ” or “ Dollars for Dogs ” donations from fellow students , and took turns collecting donations from each homeroom .
The project culminated with a class trip to the Seeing Eye Foundation in Morristown , New Jersey , where the boys were greeted by a “ Seeing Eye Dog ” in training who had just passed a milestone test . After a question and answer session with Seeing Eye trainers , volunteers and puppy raisers , the boys presented the Seeing Eye with a check in the amount of $ 7,719 . Since they raised more than $ 5,000 , the Seeing Eye allowed the boys to choose a name for a future Seeing Eye dog : “ Morty .”
