It is with the above background and rationale that the teachers in the project, Active Citizenship and
environmental awareness through formal and non-formal education, plan to work with the idea of
integrating the ESD with subjects like English, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, mother
tongue, geography, social science, history, etc. which are a part of the national curriculum in almost
all levels in the eight project countries.

In September 2015, World Leaders committed to the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
Seventeen goals to achieve three extraordinary things in the next 15 years13.
1. End extreme poverty.
2. Fight inequality and injustice.
3. Fix climate change.
If every school in the world teaches children about these goals, [we ] will help them become the
generation that changed the world.
Since it will be difficult to focus on all the 17 goals, in this project, Active Citizenship and
environmental awareness through formal and non-formal education, six thematic areas were
identified, which could be used to teach sustainable development in the eight European project
schools. These six goals14 15are:
